What does a classroom have in common with a hotel ballroom or retail clothing store? At first glance, not a ton. However, when thinking of these indoor spaces in terms of lighting control needs, they’re more similar than different.
Each project likely has multiple load sources, a need to adjust levels based on ambient lighting, multiple usage scenarios, and a need for occupants to adjust light levels. The main difference is room size.

In the example below, we see how ARISTA can be used to support a 1,200 ft2 classroom that operates Monday through Friday, with planned but varying schedules week to week. By combining a daylight harvesting sensor, multiple controllers, a 4-button programmable switch, and a dual-tech ceiling sensor, the installer is able to maximize natural light while giving occupants flexibility. In this setup, a teacher or student could easily adjust lighting scenes for everyday teaching, audio-visual presentations, and background/safety lighting when class is not in session.
In a much larger retail space (2,500 ft2), similar principles apply. In this ARISTA example, the installer incorporates multiple room controllers to create use-specific lighting scenes, and to accommodate for limited natural light. Moreover, multiple occupancy sensors help facilitate appropriate lighting in limited-use spaces like restrooms and fitting rooms.

Fixture-Appropriate Controls
In addition to planning for natural lighting and activities within a space, installers should consider the various load types within an indoor environment.
New ALC1-P Phase Dimming Controllers are specifically designed to work with phase-dimming fixtures, such as sconces and track lighting, which allows for greater flexibility when planning new ARISTA projects. The ALC1-P is also compatible with electronic ballast, LED, Tungsten, MLV, and ELV loads.
Occupant-Friendly Programmable Switches
Lastly, a major part of any successful commercial lighting control project is the handoff to occupants once lighting controls are installed and configured.
New ALC-2B-BT (2-button) and ALC-4B-BT (4-button) Programmable switches allow occupants to adjust brightness levels and select lighting scenes with the push of a button. They also include default dimming functionality if a client chooses not to create their own lighting scenes.
Both switches offer a battery-powered option and can be mounted anywhere. This can take away the hassle of running wire for electricians during installation while also ensuring end-users are able to place ARISTA programmable switches where they’re most needed.
